The Public Independent Conciliators of the South-West and North-West Regions with the City Ombudsman of Cape Town and his staff

The Office of the Public Independent Conciliators of the South-West and North-West Regions have established a platform of cooperation with the Office of the City Ombudsman of Cape Town, South Africa. On invitation by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ald Geordin Hill-Lewis, the Public Independent Conciliator of the South-West Region, Mme Telelen Dorothy Atabong spouse Motaze with her counterpart of the North-West Region, Mr. Tamfu Simon embarked on a benchmarking mission to the Office of the City Ombudsman of Cape Town.

The objective of the mission which took place from the 20th to the 24th of November 2023 was to explore benchmarking and capacity building opportunities as well as experience/knowledge sharing between both institutions.

During the meeting, the Office of the City Ombudsman of Cape Town through a series of detailed presentations shared its experiences with the Public Independent Conciliator and her counterpart of the North-West Region.  The presentations were on topics like Regulatory Content and Consequence management, Investigation and People First principle for effective service delivery, Escalation Process Flow for difficult complaints, Real Estate issues, Metering Systems to check fraud in utilities, Creation of five Satellite offices for proximity service and advocacy and communication awareness as well as activity reporting techniques.

It is worth mentioning that during the first meeting chaired by the City Ombudsman, Mr Vusumzi Magwebu, the Cameroonian delegation made presentations on the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator. The presentation featured the creation, missions and functioning, complaint management procedure, accomplishments made so far, including challenges and perspectives.

At the end of the  benchmarking mission, the Public Independent Conciliators of the South-West and North-West Regions acquired knowledge which will  enable them to; continue to be catalysts of mutually accepted solutions between aggrieved parties and council administration whether regional, City and local councils, create an IT software to fast-tract the treatment of complaints to meet regulatory timelines, continue to be the neutral, impartial, independent, confidential and objective problem solver for amicable solutions between the differences of service users and Council Administration, have the ability to tract and monitor historical facts which are important to resolve certain issues and identify the trends of complaints.

It is important to mention that the platform of cooperation established during this mission will further improve benchmarking and networking opportunities. The Public Independent Conciliators left Cape town satisfied with the outcome of the mission.
